Wykons heading to town at 2-0

IRON RIVER – West Iron broke open a close game with 20 unanswered points in the second half and defeated L’Anse 27-14 in West PAC football action Friday.

The Wykons totaled 293 yards rushing, with Chasz Jonet (108 yards, one touchdown), Ron Varney (86 yards, one TD) and quarterback Andrew Peterson (72 yards, two TDs) leading the way.

“It was a marked improvement from the first week,” said Wykons coach Mike Berutti, his team slugging out a 7-0 win over Munising a week ago. “We were able to run the ball real well.”

The Wykons totaled 17 first downs to 15 for the Purple Hornets.

“L’Anse is big up front,” Berutti said. “They’re a senior-loaded team. This was a good win for us.”

West Iron’s defense was led by Jake Polich, 10 tackles, four assists; and Jonet, seven tackles. Peterson recorded three sacks and Colton Pangrazzi picked off a pass.

Ryan Rogers collected a pair of receptions for 38 yards.
