NIUWVB Start Season
DUNBAR, Wis. – The 2013 chapter of the Northland International University women’s volleyball program started its competitive season on Saturday at Mundelein, Ill.
The Pioneers travelled to host Dayspring College for a tri-match along with Emmaus College. The NIU team has been in preseason on campus for the past 10 days.
“I had some hopeful expectations and we met some of those,” said NIU Coach Dave Herron. “We put forth a competitive effort and played together. We found some things to work on going into the competitive season.”
NIU took the first match from the host Eagles from Dayspring with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-21. Olivia Smith had 32 assists in running the offense. Marissa Hawley had 12 kills along with Elizabeth Humberg’s 6 kills. Melody Spooner had 18 digs.
In the second match, NIU took a 3-0 sweep of Emmaus, 25-20, 25-16, 25-15.
Tiffany Kercher was a strong attacker for NIU with 9 kills to go along with 6 digs. Hannah Cole had 7 kills and Valerie Stauff contributed 3 kills. Northland also had 13 aces in this match.
“It was a good start and I am encouraged,” Herron said. “I also know where we need to get to my enthusiasm is somewhat careful.
“I believe God wants our abilities more than our accomplishments. If we can give an earnest, hardworking effort to our abilities God may bless with accomplishment. We don’t want to dwell on those though. We just want to keep getting better.”
NIU travels to Silver Lake College on Tuesday and then open its home schedule with a match on Thursday against UW-Fond du Lac before hosting Midwest Regional rival Maranatha on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m.
