Doubles lift IM?past WIC
KINGSFORD – Iron Mountain captured three of four doubles matches and the shorthanded Mountaineers downed West Iron County 5-3 in high school girls tennis Friday.
“We’re still missing two girls from the lineup so we’ve made our best adjustment and they came through,” said Coach Greg Stegall, whose Mountaineers bowed to Ishpeming on Thursday.
Mountaineers’ top two singles, Katie Brule and Olivia Truscott, posted wins. Truscott suffered a three-set loss Thursday.
“Katie battled a good opponent (Haley Anderson) in winning a close first set (7-5),” Stegall said. “She seems to figure things out and make adjustments.”
Iron Mountain No. 1 doubles Elli McCole-Emily Chang recovered from a 4-0 deficit in the first set to sink Meg Miatech-Jessie Prudhomme 6-4, 6-1.
“They started doing things right and minimized mistakes,” Stegall said. “I hope this is the start for good things to come for them.”
The Bugni sisters, Kate and Emily, continue to dominate at No. 2 doubles.
“They have fun and don’t feel pressure which yields positive results,” Stegall said.
Kathryn Brown partnered with freshman Grace Hansen for a two-set win at No. 3 doubles.
“Normally, they have different partners,” Stegall said. “Today they bonded and formed a solid doubles team.”
Kiki Piwarski and Michelle Wiegand triumphed for the Wykons.
“Haley Anderson played well against Katie Brule,” said WIC Coach Denise Spelgatti. “Kiki Piwarski and Michelle Wiegand played very solid matches (at Nos. 3 and 4 singles). Lexi Kinner and Megan Quayle continue to play very well (at No. 4 doubles).”
The Wykons appreciated the cooler weather and playing at Kingsford High School courts.
“After days of oppressive heat it was good to play in cooler weather today,” Spelgatti said. “Playing on the Kingsford High School courts was an also a nice treat. Thank you to them for allowing us to play there.”
West Iron (3-4) entertains Westwood on Monday, Sept. 9.
“I was hoping for better results as a team but was so happy with the play of many of the girls,” Spelgatti said. “We have some days to practice now and may have to make some changes to our lineup, but I expect to play well when Westwood comes to town.”
Allie Schive and Sydney Schram started slow but won a good match against their opponent in a jayvee match, Spelgatti said.
Iron Mountain hosts Gwinn on Thursday.
