Niagara splits in season opener

NORWAY – Kingsford came away with wins over Norway and Niagara in a volleyball triangular here Tuesday evening.

The Flivvers defeated Norway 2-1 (25-11, 20-25, 25-11) while downing the Lady Badgers (25-22, 25-22). Niagara also defeated Norway, 25-17, 25-18.

“Basically, for our first match of the season, we made a lot of mistakes,” Niagara coach Carol St. Arnauld said. “But overall I was happy. We got a chance to see where we need to improve. We’ll be alright.”

Brooklyn Wolosyn paced Niagara with 19 kills and five blocks. Shelby Borchardt tallied a team-best 37 digs. Abbey Bagnieschi recorded 42 assists and seven aces.

Norway coach Kayla DeBakker was also pleased with the efforts of her young team.

“We played pretty good overall,” she said. “We just need to keep working on our communication on the floor.”

The Kingsford jayvee team, opening its season, defeated Niagara 2-0 (25-18, 26-24), and Norway 2-1 (25-12-, 22-25, 15-13) in a pair of competitive matches. Hannah Carlson and Hailey Bourgeois led the Flivvers in serving, going 31-for-32. Ali Gering , Lauren Champion, and Brianna Robinson were top hitters while the digging of Sierra Fortner and Maria Clement keyed to the win.

Kingsford and Niagara return to action Thursday. The Flivvers open Great Northern Conference play at Stephenson, while the Badgers take part in a M&O Conference triangular with Gillett at Suring, Norway’s next action comes Tuesday at Gwinn in the Mid-Peninsula opener for the Knights.
