Runners ready to begin season

KINGSFORD – The Kingsford/Iron Mountain co-op cross country team opens its season this afternoon at the Munising Invitational.

Several new faces fill the rosters of both the boys and girls teams, with 11 of the 18 runners new this fall.

“We do have a nice background of seasoned veterans that will pull the inexperienced runners along,” Flivvers coach Dan Carey said.

Leading the team this year will be senior Dylan Lawton and sophomores Nate Carey and Jorge Sanchez.

“I would expect those three to be at the front of most races,” Carey said.

Carey said the girls team has a great mix of new and veteran runners as well.

“They have the potential of doing really well this season,” he said. “With only a week and half of training in so far, they have really pushed themselves. The team has five really strong front runners that will make this season interesting.”

After today’s meet at Munising, Kingsford competes at Marquette (Thursday, Aug. 29), North Central (Wednesday, Sept. 4) before hosting the Kingsford Invite on Tuesday, Sept. 10. That meet, open to the public, will feature some of the U.P.’s best runners. It begins at 3 p.m.
