KINGSFORD – Kingsford captured the Great Northern Conference title and shared U.P. Division 1 honors in the 2012 girls tennis season.
A repeat may be in the cards with 11 of the Flivvers’ top 14 returning this season. Although Kingsford did graduate singles standouts Sam Fleming and Michelle Scheibe.
“U.P. girls tennis shows nearly all of the one singles players and one doubles teams lost to graduation,” Flivver coach Mark Shanks said. “This should make for a very balanced and competitive season in both the Mid-Peninsula and Great Northern conferences and both divisions of U.P. tennis.”
With Fleming taking her game to UW-La Crosse, Hannah Tresedder and Santina Bianco will move up in the singles ranks. Janay Walters is slated to switch from doubles to singles.
Tresedder and Bianco took GNC singles titles last year, while Bianco added the U.P. Walters teamed with Ali VanRemortel to win No. 2 doubles championships at both tourneys.
“Sam and Michelle will be missed but the returning girls are stepping up the fill the void of both grads,” Shanks said.
Anna Shanks and Kate Lamy will return at No. 1 doubles for a third season, but the other three doubles will find new combinations. Kingsford did claim GNC No. 4 doubles with Taylor Jacobson and Jaelyn Jennings.
“A few skilled underclassmen are battling for varsity positions and will have an impact on the team,” Shanks said.
