NorthStar opens Ice Lake Clinic

IRON RIVER – Northstar Health System staff celebrated the completion of renovations at the hospital’s Ice Lake Clinic on Wednesday.

The Ice Lake Clinic is located at 1300 West Ice Lake Road, right next to the main hospital. It is a primary care clinic with physicians in behavioral health and family medicine.

Updates to the building include additional exam rooms, information technology infrastructure for the hospital’s ongoing electronic medical records project, and new interior and exterior finishings.

Northstar CEO Connie Koutouzos said that renovations started about two months ago.

“We wanted to upgrade it to give our patients a better experience,” she explained. “It’s more consistent, more modern.”

The new clinic will also be better equipped to handle electronic medical records.

“There’s more server space,” said Northstar Foundation Director Peg James. “We went live with electronic medical records at the hospital on July 15 and hope to go live here on Sept. 1.”

Northstar Board of Directors Chair Mark Tousignant pointed out that the clinic building has been used for different purposes since it was constructed in the 1980s.

“We’ve recycled this building quite a few times,” he added. “It’s worth it.”

The building was originally utilized as an ambulance garage. In fact, the lower level of the building still functions as an ambulance garage.

Later on, the upper level was turned into a physical therapy rehabilitation center, then into the primary care clinic it is today.

Northstar maintains five primary care clinics in Iron and Gogebic counties. They are located in Iron River, at Ice Lake, Genesee Street, and Riverside Plaza; Crystal Falls; and Marenisco.
