Mary Johnson

KINGSFORD – Mary C. “Cleo” Johnson, 97, of Kingsford, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.

She was born on March 7, 1916, in Ladysmith, Wis., the daughter of Edward and Vierenna Kernan. She spent most of her childhood in Aurora, Wis., and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1934.

Cleo married Erland Johnson in Kingsford in 1938. The couple resided in Kingsford, where they raised their three daughters.

Mary was a full time homemaker and the center of her life was her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they knew they could always count on her love and support. There was never any shortage of good food and goodies at Grandma’s house.

Cleo was preceded in death by her husband, Erland in 1993; one daughter, Patricia Brooks in 1998; and one son-in-law, James Haddad in 1993; her mother, Vierenna; and her stepfather, James Gordon. Also preceding her in death were one brother, Thomas (Marian) Kernan; two sisters, Dolores (Edward) Vallier and Kathleen (Carlo) Calo; and her special cousin, Helen Peterson.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole (Wayne) Broerger of Fridley, Minn., and Karen (Jack) Smith of Kingsford; one son-in-law, John (Mary) Brooks of Spread Eagle, Wis.; six grandchildren, Joanne (Walter) Howard of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Michael (Maria) Smith of Cambridge, Wis., Steven (Karen) Haddad of Colorado Springs, Colo., Diane Haddad of White Bear Lake, Minn., Kristen (Matt) Janousek of Kingsford, and Jeffery (Keri) Brooks of DePere, Wis.; 10 great-grandchildren, Jenna and Carlie Howard, Camila, Nicole and Natasha Smith, Benjamin and Oliver Haddad, Paige and Eden Janousek, and Brayden Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Father Joseph Gouin will officiate.

Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery.
