Frank Lake Sr.
NIAGARA, Wis. – Frank E. Lake Sr., 83, of Niagara, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013, surrounded by his family, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Frank was born June 14, 1930, in Niagara, Wis., son of the late Frank and Julia (Steiner) Lake. He grew up in Niagara and was a graduate of Niagara High School.
Frank served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 3, 1948 until Dec. 2, 1957, when he was honorably discharged. While serving in the Army, Frank reached the rank of sergeant serving in Korea, Germany, Guam and Hawaii. Frank was severely injured in the service, but continued to serve until being discharged.
He married Beverly Arnold on April 22, 1961, at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan. They resided together in Niagara. Frank worked for the Kingsford Chemical Co. before obtaining a position with the Niagara Paper Mill as calendar stack operator. He retired from the mill in 1980 due to health problems.
Frank was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara. He volunteered for the Niagara Volunteer Fire Department, and for 25 years maintained the Niagara ice rink with his wife Beverly.
He had many interests including watching the Green Bay Packers, gardening, fishing and playing cards. Frank especially loved family gatherings. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and his children, and babysitting his grandchildren. He liked getting out of the house, taking rides to enjoy the scenery, watching the planes come in and eating at his favorite place, Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Beverly; two sons, Frank (Lisa) Lake of Kingsford and Jerry (Gayle) Lake of Pewaukee, Wis.; four daughters, Lisa (Kerry) Berdinner of Vulcan, Linda (Richard) Robinson of Wauchedah, Sandra (Don) Powalka of Niagara, and Rose Scott of Kingsford; two sisters, Kay Peterson of Norway, and Barbara Krenn of Arkansas; 11 grandchildren, Josh Smith, Jessica Smith, Samantha Berdinner, Nicole (Cory) Groeneveld, Traci (Bob Pasowicz) Robinson, Franky (Ashley Holcomb) Lake, Lorissa (Cody Klema) Lake, Jerod Lake, Nicholas (Courtney) Hagen, Emily Powalka and Jeff Scott Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Jada, Kaden, Shane, Sage, McKenzie and Xander; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Catherine and Vertin LaCosse; two brothers, Earl “Bill” Lake and Randy Lake; two sisters, Joyce Hansen and Betty Hansen; one grandson, Jason Scott; and one son-in-law, Jeff Scott Sr.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara. The memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. The American Legion Cretton-Tutas Post 136 of Niagara will accord military honors at graveside. Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate.
Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.
