Millage proposals on Iron ballot

Staff Writer

CRYSTAL FALLS – Iron County residents will have two county-wide millage renewal proposals and one local proposal to decide in the Aug. 6 election.

On the county level, the Iron County Medical Care Facility will be seeking a renewal of 1.5 mills for a period of five years for maintenance of effort and facility operations.

If passed, the levy would raise approximately $725,112 in the first year.

Also on the county level, there will be a millage renewal proposal for .27 mills for a period of four years for operations at the county’s four senior citizen centers.

If passed, the levy would raise approximately $130,520 in the first year.

Voters in the city of Iron River and the townships of Bates, Iron River, and Stambaugh will also decide on a millage proposal of .5 mills for two years for operating, maintaining, and improving the Windsor Center.

The Windsor Center, which is located in the former West Iron County Middle School building, was established in 2009. It offers youth recreation programs, a fitness center, bocce courts, open mic nights, space for small businesses, and community activities throughout the year.

If passed, the levy would raise approximately $27,876 in the city of Iron River, $23,910 in Bates Township, $26,437 in Iron River Township, and $43,781 in Stambaugh Township in the first year.

There will be no candidates for any offices on the August ballot.

The only possible races in November will be for seats on the Iron River City Council, the Caspian City Commission, and the Gaastra City Commission. Since these positions are all non-partisan, there is no need for an August primary.

Also, due to changes in election law, there is no longer a need to hold a special election to fill the district five county commissioner seat, which was vacated by Bev Camp at the beginning of this year.

Tim Aho was appointed to the seat, and he will hold the position for the remainder of Camp’s original term of Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014.
