KINGSFORD – Roger H. Hicks, 77, of Kingsford, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 3, 1936, in Aurora, Wis., son of the late Howard and LaVerne (Walstrom) Hicks, and has been a lifelong resident of this area.
Roger joined the United States Coast Guard and served during the Korean War and Cuban Crisis from 1953-57 and from 1959-62.
On April 12, 1957, he married Catherine Sullivan in Boston. Roger worked for Grede Foundry for more than 34 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Detroit Tigers baseball and Green Bay Packers Football.
Roger is survived by his wife, Catherine “Kay;” son, Roger (Denise) Hicks of Florence, Wis.; daughter, Beverly (Ray) Jones of Winchendon, Mass.; brothers, Bruce (Myrna) Hicks of Iron Mountain, Dale Hicks of Kingsford, Doug (Dianne) Hicks of Kingsford and Randy Hicks of McAllen, Texas; sisters, Marilyn (Jerry) Koller of Maine, Charlotte Groeneveld of Illinois, Beverly (Dave) Powell of Kingsford and Ginger (Dan) Strum of Illinois; grandchildren, Casey (Cory) VanCamp of Kimberly, Wis., Tracy (Dave) Berman of Brooklyn, Wis., Roger (Kirsten Vinyetta) Hicks of Oregon, and Jennifer Simonds of Massachusetts.
He is also survived by two great friends, Ronald Richard, his Monday morning coffee buddy and Dennis Powell, his personal barber.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his stepfather, Frank Pirlot; brother, Marvin Hicks; sister, Nancy Nault; and his dogs, Ben and Tessie.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
Memorial services will follow Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
