Bertha E. Holmquist

KINGSFORD – Bertha E. Holmquist, 95, of Kingsford, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Freeman Nursing & Rehabilitation Community, where she was a resident for the past two years.

She was born Jan. 12, 1918, in Marquette, daughter of the late John and Eva (Olive) Peterson. Bertha graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette in 1936 and married Harold Holmquist on Sept. 28 that same year. They were married for 69 years when Harold passed away on May 25, 2006. The couple moved to Kingsford in 1941.

Bertha was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with family and friends. You could always count on a cup of coffee and some homemade rye bread or sweet rolls if you stopped by.

Bertha is survived by two daughters, Ellen (Ronald) Krieg of Marquette and Melanie (Dick) Froling of Green Bay, Wis.; one son, Jerry (Liz) Holmquist of Iron Mountain; six grandchildren, Michael Krieg, Rebecca (Chuck) Krieg Peterson, Rob (Samantha) Froling, Mark (Tonia) Froling, Erin (Craig) Holmquist Recla and Sven (Missie) Holmquist; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Olive (Paul) Olivier of Marquette; many nieces and nephews; and her good friend, Jan Van Haute.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Bertha was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Holmquist; and five brothers.

Private family graveside services were held at Quinnesec Cemetery.
