Two charged in U.P. inmate death

WAKEFIELD – Two prison inmates have been charged with murder following an investigation into the death of a fellow inmate at the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Marenisco.

Troopers from the Wakefield post of the Michigan State Police said that Delorean Henderson, 25, and Michael Smith, 32, were arraigned in Gogebic County Court on Monday for second degree murder charges.

The defendants were arrested back on June 4.

Charges stem from the Jan. 11 homicide of 27-year-old Randolph Connor of Muskegon.

“He was assaulted by the two individuals and he died as a result of injuries,” said Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Russell Larson of the Wakefield post.

Connor, Henderson, and Smith were all inmates at the time of the incident.

Henderson had been serving a minimum five year sentence out of Macomb County for home invasion and assault with intent to commit murder.

Smith had been serving a minimum five year sentence out of Wayne County for armed robbery and firearms charges.

The defendants will remain in custody at the Baraga Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
