IM all-stars advance
GLADSTONE – Scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth, Iron Mountain edged Norway 5-4 to capture the Little League Major (age 11-12) District 10 championship Sunday.
Iron Mountain’s all-stars now advance to state play at Ishpeming beginning Thursday, July 18.
Sunday’s title game was the third meeting between Norway and Iron Mountain in the tournament. Iron Mountain squeaked by Norway by the same margin and in a similar fashion during the pre-districts last week at Marion Park. And the teams played twice Sunday after Norway routed Iron Mountain 11-1 in five innings to set up the final.
Iron Mountain trailed 3-0 after Norway’s first at-bat in the final. Ben Snyder drove in two runs with a double and Anthony Hansen followed with a run-scoring single.
A lead-off homer by Tyler Beauchamp got IM on the board in the bottom of the first.
A two-out double by Landon Kaldor made it 4-1 Norway in the second. But IM pitchers Foster Wonders and C.J. Bolo were able to keep Norway off the board the rest of the way.
Iron Mountain’s comeback took off in the fourth. Luke Theisen bunted in a runner from third, and Jake Dumais drove in another with a single to make 4-3.
Then in the fifth, a double by Marcus Johnson helped move Charlie Gerhard around the bases. Gerhard came home on a single by Nick Opolka to tie the game 4-4.
In the sixth, Beauchamp reached on an error, moved to second on a single by Bolo and then to third after a walk to Wonders.
Earlier in the day, Norway pitchers Hansen and David Loomis combined for a no-hitter. Hansen went four innings and struck out seven, while Loomis added one more strikeout in the final inning.
Kaldor had two of Norway’s 14 hits, including a triple and a homer. Dalton Hanchek added three hits, with a home run.
Iron Mountain North players will be going door-to-door Tuesday in the Iron Mountain area as part of a fund drive for state tournament expenses.
