Verona C. Olson

KINGSFORD – Verona Carrie Olson, 90, of Kingsford, formerly of Randville, was called to her eternal Home on Saturday, July 13, 2013. She passed away at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

Mrs. Olson was born July 3, 1923 in Randville, the daughter of the late Dolph and Carrie (Babcock) Blazier.

She worked in various jobs in the local area in her early adult years. For a short time during World War Two, she worked in the defense industry in Detroit, making springs for anti-aircraft guns. From 1967 through 1985 she worked in the environmental services department at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. At the age of 81, in 2004, she emerged from retirement to become a greeter at Wal-Mart, retiring again in 2009.

Mrs. Olson married her husband of 47 years, Delphin M. (“Dado”) Olson of Sagola on December 31, 1946, in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in 1994. Both were lifelong residents of the Iron Mountain area.

She liked to read (especially her Bible and works on U.S. history), knit, crochet, and work jigsaw puzzles. Another of her favorite things was to travel and visit historical and beautiful places, especially the national parks.

Mrs. Olson attended the Family Baptist Church of Kingsford, and was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

She leaves her son Duane of Kingsford; her daughter Vicky (Ed) Patterson of Clanton, Alabama; two granddaughters, Dawn Horton of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Marie (David) Curtis of La Grange, Georgia; and five great-grandchildren, Rebecca Smiley, Christiane (Chase) Williams, Grace Curtis, Stephen Curtis, and John Curtis. She also leaves her godson, Robert Burbey of Green Bay, Wisconsin; many very special nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Viola Blazier of Iron Mountain; and many friends including those she worked with at the hospital and at Wal-Mart.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Olson was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers, Blanche Clark, Hazel Eckerberg, Norman Blazier, Lillian Semenak, Ethel Blazier, Ella Bates, Alvera Petrash, and Kenneth Blazier.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Kevin Sullivan will officiate. Burial will be in the Channing Cemetery.
