CHANNING – Channing wrapped up the regular season with a much needed win heading in to tournament play, blanking the Mid-County Mavericks 6-0 in American Legion baseball.

“Cody Berg pitched a great game,” said a team official, noting the right-hander was two outs away from a perfect game when Eddy Becerra spoiled it with an infield hit.

Berg gave up just the one hit. He walked none and struck out 10.

Cody and Noah Berg led the Railroaders with two hits apiece. Ken Pekarek and Logan ONeil each doubled and Luke Jauquet singled.

Mavericks pitcher Ricky Chaney yielded seven hits, walked one and struck out two.

Channing hosts this weekend’s Mid-Peninsula American Legion League tournament. The opener pits Kingsford and Ishpeming at 9 a.m. today. Channing will meet Hancock at 11:30 a.m.

Top-seeded Marquette faces the lowest remaining seed at 2 p.m. and Gladstone meets the other morning winner at 4:30 p.m.

The title will be decided at 1 p.m. Sunday.
