Norway, Iron County take ‘minor’ first steps

IRON MOUNTAIN – Norway turned back Iron Mountain North and Iron County downed Schaffer to open the Little League minor (age 9-10) baseball area tournament Tuesday at Larry Barkle Eastside Field.

Caleb Burklund’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Norway past Iron Mountain 6-5. Nate Thomson tagged four hits and Holden Ross added three, including a double, to spark Iron County’s 20-8 decision.

Norway built a 4-1 lead after the first inning but Iron Mountain tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth on a Blake Julian single.

Iron Mountain pulled ahead 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Hunter Fortner’s ground ball knocked in Nick Saari.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Drew Anderson worked his way out of a pickle down the third base line to even the score. Burklund’s third hit of the game sent Jeff VanHolla home with the game winner.

Ian Gorzinski doubled and singled for Norway. Ian Anderson singled twice and drove in three runs for IM.

Relief pitching was another highlight with Norway’s Evan Anderson and IM’s Julian turning in solid performances.

Tournament continues tonight with Kingsford meeting Iron County at 5 p.m. and Iron Mountain facing Schaffer at 7. Norway takes on the Kingsford-Iron County winner at 7 p.m. Thursday.
