IRON MOUNTAIN – A 72-year-old Felch man has been sentenced to a minimum of two years to 15 years in prison after he inappropriately touched a mentally disabled adult female.
Ronald Nord had entered a guilty plea to criminal sexual conduct, second degree.
His attorney Dan Anderson said Nord has learned a lesson and accepts responsibility for his actions.
Anderson asked that his client be allowed a stress test before going to prison as ordered because he may have suffered from a heart attack this past weekend.
The victim’s niece addressed the court. She said the family has known Nord for many years and he betrayed their trust.
“It disgusts myself and my family. He shouldn’t be allowed anymore time,” she said. “I am aggravated and hurt by what he did. He deserves to go and have no more time out (of incarceration). He caused enough pain to my family and we will never forgive him.”
Nord was charged with the felony after he inappropriately touched a 46-year-old woman, who has Down Syndrome, in November 2012 in Felch.
Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Richards said Nord was a successful member of society, worked at MJ Electric for 35 years and has a loving, supportive family, and doesn’t know what leads a person of his stature to do something like this.
“I will never know,” she said. “He not only committed a crime, but he violated the trust of the victim’s family.”
Nord apologized at his sentencing.
Judge Mary B. Barglind said she thought Nord’s sorry was sincere.
“Consequences of our actions last like a physical wound and will last for her lifetime. They will have devastating consequences on her,” Judge Barglind said. “Why would you stoop to this level to commit this crime?”
Judge Barglind said she took into consideration the defendant’s health, age, past positive life and the fact that he had no prior criminal history.
“I am taking into consideration the serious nature of this crime and the person victimized here. A prison sentence won’t cause you a death sentence,” she said.
Nord was sentenced to a minimum of 24 months to a maximum of 15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections with credit for two days served.
In exchange for a guilty plea, one count of criminal sexual conduct, third degree, and two counts of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree were dismissed.
