NORWAY – Norway, rebounding from a tough loss Sunday, used a five-run second inning to pull away from Kingsford on its way to a 9-0 victory Monday evening at Marion Park in an elimination bracket game of the Little League Major (age 11-12) District 10 tournament.

Norway’s all-stars move on to Gladstone to face a one-loss team from that bracket Friday at 3 p.m. (Central).

Anthony Hansen kept the Kingsford bats in check, firing a four-hit, complete-game shutout. He whiffed seven.

Norway cranked two solo home runs in the contest. Trey Doda knocked one deep over the left-center fence for the game’s first run in the second inning.

Ben Snyder blasted an even farther shot in the sixth, the ball landing on the top of the batting cage stationed beyond the left field wall.

A double by Hunter Riley and a single by Payton Thompson helped start Norway’s stars in the big second inning. Riley came home on a wild pitch before David Loomis lined a shot through the left side to score Thompson.

An error helped plate another tally before Doda slapped a two-run single to right.

Two more Norway runs scored in the fourth. Travis Bentley belted a triple to the corner in right field and came home on a throwing error. Dalton Hanchek later singled in a run.

Nick McCole shouldered the loss for Kingsford. Daunte Fortner also pitched.

Hunter Lindeman connected for two of Kingsford’s hits. McCole and Rutter also singled, Rutter banging a hard-hit ball off the fence in right center.

The Little League minor tournament opens tonight in Iron Mountain with Schaffer and Iron County scheduled to meet at Larry Barkle Eastside Field at 6 p.m. The winner of the game faces Kingsford Wednesday. Norway and Iron Mountain follow Tuesday’s first game.
