FENCE, Wis. – Mary K. (Kate Thomas) Carlson, 96, of Fence, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born in what is now Fern, Wis., on Dec. 28, 1916; the daughter of Griffith and Mary (Gleason) Thomas, who traveled from Waukau, Wis. making Florence County their home in September 1900.
Kate met her future husband, Roy T. Carlson, when as a young boy he and his family visited Fence. On May 1, 1937, they were united in marriage at Elgin, Ill. They resided in Chicago and Milwaukee for several years until they purchased the Ole Bergstrom home in Fence in 1944.
They were snowbirds (Florida) for many years. Spring was time to return to the farm and the many chores that entailed with lots of gardening and harvesting. Their door was always open and welcomed family and friends to wonderful meals, cards, and laughter.
Roy and Kate celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary six months before his death on Nov. 7, 2007. They had also suffered the loss of two sons, Ronald T. in 1987 and Robert Wayne in 1984.
In addition to her parents, all of Kate’s large family of siblings: Esther (Edwin) Hoaglund, Sylvia (Ed) Nichols, Clarence Thomas, Edward (Kate) Thomas, Blanche (Paulie) Johnson, Harry (Uncle Hank) Thomas, Dorothy (Thomas) McDonald and Eleanor (Orris) McLain, preceded her in death. Many dear and special nieces and nephews also pre-deceased her.
Kate leaves three daughters, Evelyn Geraldine Doyal of Crowley, Texas, Nancy Lee (Lynn) Nelson of LaCrosse, Wis. and Cynthia C. (Mike) Yilmaz of Leesburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Renee (Doyal) Ware, Shelley (Doyal) Price, William Doyal, Susan (Carlson) Hanson, Arnold Carlson, Patrick Nelson, Michael Nelson, Alexander T. Yilmaz, and Mark Yilmaz; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.
Kate will be brought home to be reunited with Roy, many of her family, friends and neighbors at the Fence, Wis. cemetery.
