IRON MOUNTAIN – Edward Albert Roberge, 90, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette surrounded by his family.
He was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Michael and Helen (Popko) Roberge.
Edward graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1941 and was a lifelong resident of the area. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force (Army Aircorps) on Dec. 5, 1942, and served with the 436th Troop Carrier Group.
Ed was an Airborne radar & radio operator in Europe during World War II and spent time in the European Theater. He received several battle stars, air medals and a unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Ed married Jule Betty Kaufmann on Aug. 4,1945, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He worked as a brakeman and a conductor for the Chicago North Western railroad for 37 years, retiring on Nov. 8, 1982. Edward loved spending time with his family, and he enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Jule (Kaufmann) Roberge of Iron Mountain; three daughters, Susan (Gary) Edwards of St. Paul, Minn., Sallie (Marvin) Niemi of Ishpeming, and Debra Roberge of Ishpeming; and one brother, Donald (Jeanette) Roberge of Iron Mountain.
He also leaves 13 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Ed is also survived by special neighbors, Steve and Lori Fries, and Chris and Gracie Fries.
Edward was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James Roberge; and one granddaughter, Mary Ann DeJuliannie.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from noon until 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
Memorial services will follow at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will officiate.
Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Cemetery Park. Full military honors will be accorded by the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50.
