Stars winding down season
NIAGARA, Wis. – Niagara Northern Stars U13 boys closed out their regular season by beating previously undefeated Oshkosh 3-1.
Oshkosh opened the scoring with a first-period goal, but the Stars answered with a goal from Ben Oratch off a crossing pass from Danny Fuchs.
In the second half, the Stars took the lead when Oratch crossed the ball to Logan Drake who made a solid shot for a goal. Brent Dumke scored the final goal, assisted by Oratch.
Stars finished the season in third place with a 6-2-1 record in the East Central Soccer League. They will play in the Appleton Summer Shootout tournament this weekend.
Northern Stars U14 girls took on Kaukauna and Wrightstown in recent soccer play.
Undefeated Kaukauna trailed 1-0 before downing the Stars 3-1.
“A great through ball” from Sierra Fortner led to a goal by Brianna Robinson just inside the left post seven minutes in to the game,” noted Coach Ken Karich. “The early lead had Kaukauna rattled a little bit.
“We had some great shots but their keeper was solid and we could not get another one in. A couple breakdowns on defense and a penalty kick gave them their goals.”
Stars goalie Hannah Carlson was cited for a “great job.”
“They had been winning games 7-0, 8-0 so holding them to three felt good,” Klarich said.
The Stars traveled to Wrightstown and played to a scoreless tie in a weather-shortened contest.
“When we took corner kicks, they had all 11 players inside the ’18’ and just made any shot difficult,” Klarich said. “The wind and rain made things hard.”
Hot weather exhausted both teams in the return match at Riverside Park. An early second half goal gave Wrightstown a 1-0 lead but Cassidy Morkin responded a few minutes later with a 35-yard blast that took a high bounce just over their keeper’s hands to tie it back up.
Coach Klarich cited “great mid-field work” from Mallory Jayne, Maya Schwamlien, Katelyn Charette and Kara Pietila.
Niagara Northern Stars U14 girls closed out the final week of the soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Kiel.
A great cross from the right side by Marissa Klarich to Brianna Robinson for a 10-yard shot was the deciding play, according to Coach Ken Klarich.
“Alex Gill was dropping corner kicks in front of the goal and we had several shots but just could not add another goal,” Klarich said. “Alex and Marissa play great defense for us, but I’ve been moving some players around trying to spark the offense.”
In a doubleheader with unbeaten Greenville (4-0-2), the shorthanded Stars battled to a 1-1 draw in the opener and triumphed 1-0 in the second game.
In the first game, Abby Wentarmini drove in the final 30 yards on the right side to score to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. A penalty kick in the second half tied things up for Greenville.
The second match was scoreless untill the final minute when a free kick from the right side by Riley Poupore, one of the U12 players called up for the match, got through the penalty box to Maddie Koski and she put it in for a 1-0 win.
Great saves by Abby Person in both games kept the Stars near the top of their division, Klarich noted.
The Stars also blanked the Howard Hurricanes 2-0 in a weather shortened game.
Midway through the first half, a penalty for tripping gave the Stars a penalty kick. Hannah Carlson’s kick just over the keeper’s hands gave Niagara a 1-0 lead.
After a weather delay and a short halftime, Brianna Robinson made a long run and scored just to the left of the keeper.
A short time later, lightning ended the game.
Bethany Fehr, Ashlee Klarich, Maddie Ryan and Andilee Conery played solid games for the Stars.
On the season, the U14girls went 5-1-3 and took second place in the division. The only loss came to the undefeated division winners. The Stars allowed just 5 goals this season.
Tryouts for next summer’s Northern Stars will be held in August. More information about online registration will be coming in the next few weeks.
