Ruth Grunlund

IRON MOUNTAIN – Ruth Elaine Grunlund, 89, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Freeman’s Nursing Center surrounded by her family.

She was born on April 23, 1924, in Felch, daughter of the late Edward and Minnie (Dixon) Wickman.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Felch High School in 1942. She attended Bay de Noc Community College and received her LPN degree. Ruth worked as a receptionist for Dr. W. Schmutzler on the Dickinson County Hospital OB floor for 15 years, and in Illinois at a nursing home for three years.

Ruth was a very active member of First Lutheran Church. She was a Luther League counselor, was active in the Sunday School program, and belonged to the LCW and WELCA-Lydia Circle. Ruth was also past treasurer and co-chair for the S.H.A.R.E. program and Crystal Lake Dance Club Treasurer. She was past president of the LPN Association, the AFSCME Local 1176, and past vice-president of AFSCME of the State of Michigan.

Ruth enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her entire family. She also enjoyed her trips to the casino and entertainment visits to the nursing home with her husband George Hirn.

Ruth is survived by her husband, George Hirn; two sons, Dennis (Susan) Theisen and Rodney Theisen; four step-sons, Don (Dawn) Hirn, Randy Hirn, Ron Hirn and Gary (Toni) Hirn; two step-daughters, Denise (Jessie) Brown and Cindy (Ray DePotie) Hirn; four brothers, Ray (Beverly) Wickman, Cecil (Doris) Wickman, Warren (Betty) Wickman and Jerry (Terry) Wickman; one sister, Helen Ann Mumma; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wickman, Betty Brocker, Marge Nelson, and Orice (Harlan) Walters; one brother-in-law, Wayne Theisen; four grandchildren, Brent Theisen, Shannon (Kurt) Rosenthal, Edward (Danielle) Theisen and Grant (Erin) Theisen; ten great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and 9 step-great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by husbands, Earl Theisen and Holger Grunlund; sisters, Dorothy Freda and Jane Sandri; brothers, Arnold (Farmer) Wickman and Donald Wickman; brothers-in-law, Louise Sandri and Richard Mumma.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. James Lindgren will officiate.

Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
