Kingsford owns two outright U.P. boys tennis championships in the past 60 years.

Coach Mark Shanks’ Flivvers prevailed last month in the U.P. Division 1 finals. The Flivvers of Coach Henry Mattson grabbed the U.P. Class B trophy in 1953.

Kingsford, expected to be a strong team according to a 1953 preview, captured the Menominee Range title en route to the U.P.

Gene Turk and Larry Gunville paced the Flivvers in singles while Art Viens-Bob Wiele comprised the top doubles. Jack Gibson, Paul Treado, Clare Willman, Henry Wepsala and Tracy Wales completed the roster.

The Flivvers, 9.75 points, held off Iron Mountain, 5.75, and Stambaugh, 4.5, for the Class B hardware.

Turk defeated teammate Gunville for the singles title. Iron Mountain’s Jerry Bianco-Joe Pesavento got the better of Viens-Wiele in doubles.

“They were good, very good at the net,” Viens recalled.

Wiele went on to win the 1954 U.P. singles title.

Fan-friendly Kenny Schrader visited Wisconsin race tracks this weekend. The 58-year-old raced last night at Oshkosh Speedzone, tonight at 141 Speedway (Francis Creek) and Sunday at Seymour Speedway.

“I still enjoy getting behind the wheel on dirt and asphalt,” Schrader, a longtime NASCAR driver, told Joe Verdegan of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Schrader who appeared at Norway Speedway in 1994, handled all of his racing, fan and media obligations in a first-class manner …
