ND juniors win two
IRON MOUNTAIN – North Dickinson chalked two junior baseball wins this week, defeating Iron Mountain Subway 11-3 in seven innings and topping FNB Crystal Falls 16-9.
Against Subway, Garret O’Neil pitched for the win, allowing two hits while striking out four in four innings of work. John Nelson finished the game and didn’t allow another hit, fanning one.
Jared Miller’s double to the fence scored a run early and his single to right scored two more in the fourth to pace ND. Luke Jauquet also had two hits in the game, and singles were carded by O’Neil, Zac Suarez, Tyler Smith and Mike Miller.
Trent Juul took the loss and recorded seven strikeouts. Josh Tucker and Aaron Bolo had hits for Subway.
Against FNB, Smith started for ND and recorded two strikeouts while allowing only one hit. Alec Challancin finished things off with four strikeouts.
Six players had hits in the outing. Miller tagged two doubles and Jared Miller had a double and single. Jauquet, Smith and Gavin Johnson each added two hits apiece. O’Neil singled as well.
Joe Roell’s two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth brought home Quenten Ackerman with the winning run for North Dickinson in a thrilling 6-5 Little League major win over Elks. ND had led 4-0 after four innings, but Elks rallied in the fifth. Foster Wonder capped the comeback with a three-run home over the fence in center to tie the game. A run in the top of the sixth allowed Elks to take a 5-4 lead, but Ackerman tied it in the bottom half with a single to right center that scored Maximus Mattson on a close play at the plate ahead of Roell’s game-winning hit.
ND pitcher Roell allowed one hit, struck out nine and walked six. Cameron Schultz allowed four hits, struck out one and walked none. Elks pitcher Jurgen Kleiman allowed eight hits, struck out four, and walked two. Dan Hellman allowed two hits.
Leading the hitting for ND was Roell with two triples and a single. Ackerman had a triple and two singles. Chase Carlson, Sonny Tolonen, Dugan Mattson and Cameron Swiss each had singles for ND.
Along with Wonders’ homer, Tony Feira, Kleiman, Jacob Maxon and Lucas Maxon each had singles for the Elks.
Beaulier’s Building defeated Ishpeming’s all-stars 4-1 in senior Little League. Brett Swanson earned the win going 6 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts. He allowed only three hits while walking one before being pulled due to pitch count restrictions. Jaxon Ferree came on to record the last two outs and earn the save. Beaulier plated all four runs in the third. Cameron Mulka and Donny Lee each reached base to begin the rally before Brendan McGuire, David McCole and Joe Linn each connected with consecutive two-out singles. McCole led Beaulier with two singles.
Allen Painting and Decorating and Aurora Senior Little League baseball teams split a doubleheader. Aurora took the first game 6-5 and APD took the second 12-6. Dan Harrington, Bubba Johnson and Adam Szabo pitched game one for APD. Harrington and Alex Wiitanen led APD hitters with two hits each. Szabo and Justin Lavarnway added singles. APD pitchers Szabo, Gage Yaggie, Wiitanen and Brody Sundquist secured the game two win. Wiitanen and Mike Holmberg each provided two hits. Yaggie, Szabo, Harrington, Sundquist and Jacob Mongrain added singles. Tyler Beck led Aurora hitters with a double and single.
