IRON RIVER – The ongoing renovation of Iron River’s former Central School into the Apple Blossom Apartments was celebrated on Wednesday with a ceremonial groundbreaking event.

Construction on the project started in late March and is expected to be completed by next year.

“It’s fitting that in its 110th year, 2014, Central School will don a new name and a new purpose,” said Jim Gibula, chair of the Iron River Downtown Development Authority. “It will once again serve the city of Iron River and its people.”

Once completed, the Apple Blossom Apartments will contain 22 affordable housing units.

Officials who gathered for the groundbreaking included Iron River City Council members, developer Tim Hovey, architect Barry Polzin, and representatives from the general contractor Wolverine Building Group.

“We’re extremely excited and proud to be part of the team working on this project,” said Hovey. “It’s a dedicated group of people.”
