Melvin W. Miner

NORWAY TOWNSHIP – Melvin W. Miner, 70, of Norway Township, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from an accident at his home.

He was born in Saginaw on Sept. 12, 1942 the son of Gerald and Edith (Hall) Miner.

Mel graduated from Gladwin High School in 1960 and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era.

He married Emogene Rumminger on June 5, 1965 at Round Lake Baptist Church in Gladwin, Mich.

Mel graduated from Wayne State University on June 20, 1968 and moved to Norway in 1978.

He became a partner in the D.A. Asp Memorial Funeral Home in Norway in 1978 and sole proprietor of the Melvin W. Miner Funeral Home in 1981.

He was a licensed Michigan and Wisconsin Funeral Director for more than 35 years, retiring in 2004.

Mel was a member of the Hall-DeWinter Post 145, American Legion, and former member of the Norway-Vulcan Kiwanis Club, Vulcan-Norway-Loretto Lions Club and the Norway Civic Club.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, going to his camp, fishing, hunting, boating, camping with family and friends, and after retirement wintering in Texas.

Mel is survived by his wife, Emogene; sons, Paul (Antonella) Miner and their children, Alyssa and Hannah, Alan (Jennifer) Miner and their children, Ailee, Daniel and Katherine; parents, Gerald and Edith Miner of Midland; brother, Tearle (Gail) Miner of Midland; sister, Cynthia (David) Licht of Midland; brother-in-law, Eugene Rumminger; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 2 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway.

American Legion services will take place on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 3 at 10 a.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home with Rev. James Danielson officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
