Forest Park girls extend streak to five

FELCH – Make it a handful for the Forest Park girls.
That’s how many victory laps the Trojans have taken after the Skyline Conference track meet during the past five years as they won again Friday with 141 points.
Runner-up Bark River-Harris scored 108, followed by Rapid River 83, Mid Peninsula 74, North Dickinson 69 1/2, Carney-Nadeau 34, North Central 15 1/2 and Republic-Michigamme 0.
Junior Mary Grandahl led the Trojans with three victories. She took the 200-meter dash in 28.08 seconds, anchored the winning 400 and 1600 relays and was runner-up to teammate Maria Stankewicz in the 100.
Stankewicz was clocked in 13.64 seconds, with Grandahl at 13.81 in the 100.
“I felt I could have done better in the 200, although I finished very strong,” said Grandahl. “We’ve been struggling with our handoffs (in relays) in practice, but we seem to come together in the meets. Our regional (Division 3 at North Dickinson) went beyond perfect, which is what we needed. I just want all our girls, including myself, to do their best their best at the U.P. Finals and be satisfied.”
Forest Park’s Amanda Bustillos, fueled by a pair of strong finishes, won the 1600 (6:00.72) and 3200 (14:31.75) and Kendra Campbell copped the 100 hurdles (17.63) and 300s (52.71).
“I’m proud of the way our hurdlers performed,” said Forest Park coach Chandra Ziegler. “Our girls have great attitudes and give us a lot of effort, which is a big key for us. We have that tradition going. All-around, we’re real pleased.”
North Dickinson junior Deborah Starnes cleared a season-best 8-9 and won on a tie-breaker in pole vault and copped long jump with a personal-best leap of 15 feet.
“The season started late due to the weather and we didn’t get a chance to work on our pole vaulting that much,” said Starnes. “I expected to go over eight feet. Then when we got to 8-6, I was struggling a little. I was excited and relieved to get over 8-6. This is a big boost going into Finals. I’m also excited about doing my best jump in long jump. I’ve been working with the weights more and developed some leg strength.”
