100-plus Women selects Northwoods Airlifeline to receive $17,300 donation

IRON MOUNTAIN – The local organization, 100-plus Women Who Care in Dickinson County, continues to be a powerful force in the community.

At its most recent meeting in May, they selected Northwoods Airlifeline to be the third recipient of their generous donations totaling $17,300.

Based in Dickinson County, Northwoods Airlifeline has been in existence for 25 years bridging the logistical gap in medical care for countless families. It meets the needs of individuals who are under severe time constraints for medical procedures, who are unable to travel by other means, or who are financially distressed.

Their most urgent transports involve transplant cases to larger medical centers where the window of opportunity to perform the surgery is small and patients must get there quickly.

They also have received transport requests from chronically ill people who cannot drive long distances or cannot afford commercial flights to specialized medical facilities.

Northwoods Airlifeline has provided transportation for relatives of severely injured patients who have to be transferred to another hospital for treatment. And they have flown terminal patients home to be with their families for their remaining days.

Northwoods Airlifeline is staffed with nine volunteer pilots and one volunteer flight coordinator. Their funding comes primarily from private donations.

In the five months since its initial meeting in December, 100-plus Women Who Care in Dickinson County have donated a total of $47,175 to three local 501(c)(3) charities in Dickinson County.

The membership now included 312 women, with 112 individual members and 62 teams of 2, 3 or 4 women.

“What is remarkable is that we are still growing,” said a spokesperson for the group’s steering committee. “At every meeting we have more and more women becoming part of our membership. It is truly inspiring.”

The next meeting of 100-plus Women Who Care in Dickinson County is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, at Pine Grove Country Club, at which time another charity will be selected.
