11th District elects new officers
RAPID RIVER – The election officers to serve the 11th district of the American Legion highlighted the 11th district spring meeting, hosted by Legion Post 301 in Rapid River on Saturday, April 20.
The officers to serve the 2013-14 include Stan Kennedy, Pickford American Post 323 as commander; vice commander is James Wash, Post 340. Wayne Roy, Rock Post 559 is adjutant; Martin Matchinski, Egadine Post 290, finance officer; Lou Oberle, Post 290, chaplain; Oral Thompson, Escanaba River Post 115, sergeant-at-arms; Alfonse VanHese, service officer; Frank Rodman, Post 340, historian and publicity; Mike Bruntjens, Gladstone Post 71, judge advocate.
David Spencer, Pickford Legion Post 323 was nominated for 5th Zone commander.
A round of applause was given to all incoming officers and members stood for a moment of silence for their departed members.
Don Hudon, State Legion Baseball chairman, spoke on the upcoming summer conference to be held in Menominee and he strongly encouraged those attend that they would make their lodging arrangements as soon as possible as the rooms are going fast. Hudon also spoke on the 11th and 12th district baseball tournaments, which will be played in Menominee.
Lou Oberle spoke on membership noting that 5th Zone is in fourth place, however the 11th District is in 15th place out of 16. It is most important that all Legion posts complete their membership drives, he said. Oberle also talked about Wil-Win Lodge, which opened May 1.
Past Department Commander Bill Hafeman of Powers, talked about the Healing Water Project.
Spencer discussed the State Legion Convention to be held at the Soo and the need for assistance with registration at the convention.
It was noted that no Legion post has come forward to host the district’s fall meeting.
A sympathy card was passed around for the Al Jokela family. The 50/50 drawing was won by Richard Wiedner of Rock Post 559.
The commander expressed appreciation to the Rapid River Post for hosting the meeting and for the great lunch and hospitality. “Thanks for the large attendance and participation which made for a great meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone at Menominee Post 146 on June 15. Let’s have all of District 11 posts in attendance and hopefully we can celebrate at least at 90 percent goal in membership.”
Stan Kennedy of Pickford Post 323 presented a check to Frank Rodman of Hermansville Post 340, deputy representative for the American Legion at the Oscar Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain to be used for patient activities at the hospital.
