Flivvs, Hematites split doubleheader

KINGSFORD – A 5-4, eight-inning loss to host Kingsford Friday left the Ishpeming High School girls softball team with a doubleheader split.

In the opener, IHS romped, 13-6.

Gabby Croley hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning of the second game to help give the Hematites (6-7) a 4-4 tie.

But Kingsford’s Libby Lee hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth for the Flivvers’ extra-inning triumph.

“We had two runners on in the top of the eighth, but our runner at third tried to steal home and was thrown out to end the inning,” Ishpeming manager Jeremy Thompson said.

Caitlin Korvela, who took the mound loss in relief, went 3-for-5 and scored a run. Teammate Lindsey Thompson chipped in two hits, including a triple.

Emily Murdock got the win in relief.

In the opener, the Hematites posted 18 hits in their seven-run triumph.

Sinead Korvela went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI; Lindsey Thompson turned in a 3-for-5 plate performance and drove in five runs; and Emily Myers went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

“Our bats came out and set the pace for the game,” manager Thompson said. “It was the best game the team has played to date.”

Murdock was saddled with the loss, but rapped out two hits at the plate, including a double. Janay Walters and Maria Wiltzius added two hits each.
