Florence tackles Elcho
FLORENCE, Wis. – Mallory Lund tagged three hits and Florence downed Elcho 13-7 in a WIAA Division 4 softball regional opener Thursday.
Coach Dan Robinson’s Bobcats built a 10-0 lead in the fourth inning before the Hornets struck for three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the seventh.
Lund tripled in Florence’s five-run third inning. The Bobcats collected six hits in the game, with three more from Jenny Goeman (triple), Alix Loker (double) and Keaghan Doda.
Bobcats ace Kasey Roff scattered 10 hits and fanned eight.
Florence travels to Three Lakes on Tuesday for a regional semifinal.
… In Three Lakes, Niagara started with a double from Casey Spigarelli but could not bring her home, and the Lady Badgers suffered its only shutout of the season, falling 14-0 to Three Lakes.
Maison Huth and Ambrielle Amundson added base hits for Niagara. Marah Harvath pitched and had four strikeouts.
“Looking back on this season I think that we have definitely improved as a team,” Badgers coach Emily Payette said. “I have improved as a coach and each player has shown improvement. That was what I was looking for with this season. I am happy that we have made such improvements and also happy that we were able to put some runs on the board.
“Going into next year I hope to continue to improve as a program and win a few games.”
…In Pembine, Goodman-Pembine posted a 13-1 five-inning win over Phelps.
Rachel Stankevich was the winning pitcher for the Patriots striking out seven of the 17 batters she faced, allowing only one hit and one run.
“The entire defense was tight and played well,” Patriots coach Sara Seidel said.
Marissa Moloney led the offense for the Patriots racking up two hits and scoring two runs. She also drew two walks and had two RBIs.
“The offense hit well, with almost every girl scoring a run,” Seidel said.
Patriots (8-6) go to top-seeded Wausaukee Tuesday.
