Bobcats’ best

FLORENCE, Wis. – Jenny Goeman and Louie Garcia, saluted for leadership and other intangibles by their coaches, took home Florence High School’s premier awards Wednesday.

Goeman was the recipient of the Virginia Ehrenreich Female Athlete of the Year while Garcia accepted the David Wenzel Memorial Athlete of the Year during the 44th annual Florence High School Athletic Awards Ceremony.

“Great runner, great leader,” Bobcats cross country coach Karen Harrison said of Goeman. “She is dedicated and had great perseverance.”

Goeman, who will continue her distance running at Concordia, also earned academic all-state from the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association.

Florence’s lone four-year scholar-athlete claimed MVP awards in cross country and softball. She also wrestled for the Bobcats.

Garcia, a three-sport athlete, stood out in baseball with his pitching (4-1 record) and hitting (.370 batting average).

“Louie has shown great leadership and always gives 100 percent,” Bobcats baseball coach Dave LaPoint said. “He is a gamer and plays with heart all the time.”

Garcia, co-most outstanding for baseball, also played football and basketball.

In other honors, Austin Herman garnered the K. Casey Constantini Memorial Scholarship.

Florence Athletic Booster Club scholar-athlete awards went to Kasey Roff and Cole Dollar. U.S. Army scholarships were handed out to Kyle Abbas, Jeremy Schalow and Josh Bomberg.

NOTES: Veteran volleyball coach Trudy Rochon, after a “roller coaster” season that resulted in a regional championship, confirmed she will return next season. Northern Lakes Conference’s decision to revise the volleyball schedule will eliminate Florence’s annual dual match with Niagara. Although the teams will continue to meet in regular season tournaments … LaPoint, commenting on Bobcats baseball assistant and pro wrestler “Irish Mickey” Doyle: “Mike adds fun, humor and intensity.” … Girls basketball coach Amy Johnson has resigned. A new coach may be named next week … Athletic director Jim Uren honored booster club president Dave Bauer and baseball coach Dave LaPoint for their many years of service. Bauer, who helped organize the club, has stepped down as president but will continue to assist the boosters … Florence wrestling coach Shane McLain, on two-time state qualifier and school record-holder (138 wins) Cole Dollar: “Great athlete, great individual. You don’t know what he’s going to do out there.”
