Mary VanGoethem

NORWAY – Mary R. VanGoethem, 98, of Norway, died Friday, May 10, 2013 at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.

She was born in Zwyndrecht, Belgium on Feb. 27, 1915, the daughter of the late Frank and Elisabeth (DeRidder) Vaerewyck.

Mary married Louis DeRoeck on Dec. 31, 1936, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. He preceded her in death in a mining accident in November of 1942.

She married Joseph VanGoethem on May 22, 1957 at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan. He preceded her in death in January 1973.

Mary was a very active member of St. Barbara’s Church, belonging to the Legion of Mary, the Women’s League, St. Barbara’s Senior Choir and the Daughters of Isabella. She also enjoyed the Norway-Vulcan Senior Center and volunteered at the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain.

Mary is survived by her sons, Jim (GeorgeAnn) DeRoeck of Norway and Robert DeRoeck of Norway; stepson, Jerry (Donna) VanGoethem of Norway; stepdaughter, Aileen (Jerry) Pancheri of Sault Ste. Marie; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great- grandchildren; sisters, Florence Socha of Norway and Rose Dishaw of Kingsford; step-son-in-law, Dick Olson of Rochester; brother-in-law, Bob Cocking of Iron Mountain; special niece, Pat Richtig; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Alphonse Vaerewyck and sister, Madelyn Cocking.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Barbara’s Church in Vulcan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the church, with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Mary’s name to St. Barbara’s Church.
