KINGSFORD – Kingsford capitalized on lineup changes and blanked Iron Mountain 3-0 in a high school girls soccer match Thursday played under typical weather conditions for the rivals.

The Flivvers whitewashed the Mountaineers 2-0 last week as sleet, wind and sub-40 temperatures affected play. A cold rain soaked the participants this time.

“We need to quit playing Iron Mountain on Thursdays,” quipped a soggy Flivver coach Todd Formolo. “We changed some things and played really good soccer.”

Kingsford moved Emily Formolo to stopper, Santina Bianco to right wing and Sam Fleming to center.

That helped us a whole lot,” Formolo said.

Fleming, with an assist from senior Angie Tripp, provided Kingsford with a 1-0 halftime lead.

“We were flat,” Mountaineer coach Jim Laydon said. “The last few games we were really stepping up. Tonight we just weren’t in our game.

“I think Kingsford played well. They definitely played better than us.”

The Flivvers peppered Mountaineer goalie Hannah Hakamaki with over 30 shots, but just three got by the sophomore.

“We had so many shots on goal,” Formolo said. “We played really good in formation but we still need to work on finishing.”

Flivver sophomore goalie Courtney Qualley turned away the few attempts her way.

“They just had more desire than us,” Laydon said. “We just didn’t want it. I couldn’t seem to motivate them.”

Flivver senior Marissa Menghini launched a 25-yard bomb midway through the second half for a 2-0 lead.

Iron Mountain’s chance to pare the lead came on a penalty kick with 14 minutes showing. Qualley stopped Sarah Girard’s blast and a rebound.

With seven minutes to go, sophomore Tori Boersma knocked home a goal. Santina Bianco, who triggered the first goal with a corner kick, assisted on the finale.

The Mountaineers (1-7) travel to Clintonville, Wis., tonight.

“They were just stepping in front of us and taking the ball,” Laydon said. “We were passing the ball not accurately.”

The Flivvers (3-2) head to Rhinelander this weekend, meeting Wausau West tonight and Wausau East and Green Bay on Saturday.
