AURORA, Wis. – Bruce E. Osterberg, 78, of Aurora, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in Elkhart Lake.
He was born on May 29, 1934, in Aurora, son of the late Evald and Edith (Roos) Osterberg. He attended Aurora and Kingsford schools, graduating from Kingsford High School in 1952.
Bruce married Helen Carlson on Dec. 26, 1955, at the Aurora Free Church, and together they spent nearly 58 wonderful years. He went on to attend and receive degrees from North Park College, Seattle Pacific College, Northern Michigan University, and Michigan State University.
He was a classroom teacher for grades 3-12 for 15 years, and served as an elementary and junior high principal for the Breitung Township School District for 16 years, before retiring in 1991.
During retirement, he bought a sawmill and spent his days working with lumber. He loved flying and was a pilot for many years. He also enjoyed teaching Sunday School and spending time with his grandchildren. Bruce was a longtime member of the First Covenant Church of Iron Mountain and a current member of the Aurora Free Church. He served multiple terms on the Florence County Board.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Helen Osterberg of Aurora; children, Mark (Julie) Osterberg of Marshfield, Wis., Doug (Laurie) Osterberg of Menasha, Wis., Judy (Dan) Carlson of Bloomfield, N.Y., and Steve (Cathy) Osterberg of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho; grandchildren, Britt (Christian Felix), David, Kirsten, Erik, Paul, Steven, Nathan, Heather Settle, Peter, and Maggie; great-grandchildren, Shea and Paige; siblings, Ken, Lois, Gary, Lindes, Pete, Fred, JoAnn, Donna, Sandy, Randy, and Debbie.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter in-law, Sarah; and brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Phyllis Osterberg.
The visitation will be Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Aurora Free Church in Aurora.
The funeral service will follow at noon Monday at the church. Rev. Karl Utzat will officiate.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery. Bruce’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
