MARINETTE – Melissa Bushmaker’s grand slam turned defeat into victory, and Kayla Boye’s pitching helped earn a doubleheader sweep Tuesday.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Academy/Lena softball team defeated Niagara 6-3 and 13-3 at Hoagland Field.

In the first game, Niagara took the lead in the sixth inning on an error and Caitlin Branback’s fielder’s choice.

Two hit batsmen and a walk to Hailey Salter set the stage for Bushmaker’s slam, which left the yard.

Kristen Sorensen earned the victory with three runs on four hits and three walks. She struck out seven.

Brooke Ermi doubled to lead off the fourth for the Badgers – a first-year program. Mara Harvath pitched a complete game for the Badgers. She struck out seven, walked seven and allowed four hits.

In the nightcap, Boye fanned five, walked five and allowed three runs on four hits.

Bushmaker singled and scored in the Cavalettes’ three-run first inning. Sorensen slugged a two-run single in the second.

Sorensen and Riley Schultz had back-to-back hits in a three-run fourth, abd Kayla VanLanen doubled and scored on a Schultz base hit in the fifth.

Ermi pitched the second game for Niagara. Mackenzie Greg led the team with two hits.
