IM hopes to begin this week

IRON MOUNTAIN – Most of Iron Mountain High School’s 2012 girls golf leaders are back this spring.

Graduated senior Abbie Simone along with Katelynn Johnson, Maria Pirkola, Cassie Feira and Kathryn Brown paced last year’s Mountaineers.

“Overall, a lot of experience with three seniors and the sophomores that have played a lot as freshmen,” Mountaineer coach Donny Bianco noted.

Iron Mountain also welcomes back Sarah Pirkola, returning from a torn ACL injury which prevented her from playing last year.

“Sarah had been improving steady during her freshmen and sophomore years and looks to get back to that form,” Bianco said.

Mountaineers are looking forward to matches this week in Manistique (Tuesday) and Escanaba (Thursday).

Iron Mountain boys golfers will try to open the season this afternoon at Escanaba.

Coach Bucky Johnson lists 12 golfers in his roster, including returners Tony Ward, Austin Blomquist and Matt Willman.

“We have a nice mix of talent this year but unfortunately we are way behind in our start to the season,” Johnson said.

Today’s action at Escanaba was an addition to the original schedule.

“That will be great for our team,” Johnson said. “As the weather improves and we get out on a course, we will be able to see who fits into the lineup. Right now, it’s wide open. I think we have the potential to be a good team if we play smart.”

Rosters follows:

SENIOR – Tony Ward, Matt Willman, Gage Redding. JUNIOR – Nate Markell, Garrett Tekampe. SOPHOMORE – Austin Blomquist, Levi Verrette. FRESHMEN – Kyle Johnson, Matt Opolka, Jacob Stoner, Joey Burglund, Zach Campbell.

SENIOR – Katelynn Johnson, Sarah Pirkola, Maria Pirkola. SOPHOMORE – Marti Pirkola, Cassie Feira, Kathryn Brown, Alena Herman.
