Knights hope to begin this week

NORWAY – Norway High School baseball, which made a surprising defense of its district title in 2012, returns 12 players from last year’s squad.

The Knights were 16-14 last season, beating Newberry 9-4 for the district title before upsetting top-seeded Johannesburg-Lewis 9-3 in a regional semifinal. The Knights bowed in the regional title game against Rudyard.

“We have an experienced team returning this year and it appears as if we will have competition at multiple positions,” Knights coach Tony Adams said.

The Knights offer a formidable one-two punch at the top of their pitching rotation. Senior John Grayvold, Jr., a Michigan Division 4 All-State second team pick last season, leads the staff. Dan Vivio also returns.

“Defensively, our pitching should be strong at the top,and we are excited about our younger pitchers,” Adams said. “We should have more depth on the mound this year.”

The Knights infield should shake out over the first few games as players compete for positions.

“Offensively, we have a good core of hitters returning and I am looking forward to other players making some big strides at the plate,” Adams said. “Hopefully we can make the necessary progressions as the season unfolds and be ready to compete at a high level in the state tournament.”

Mike Maule returns as assistant coach, and John Grayvold Sr. will also assist Adams.

The Knights will try to open the season Tuesday at Crivitz.
