Winter weather sends Flivvs to Superior Dome for opener
KINGSFORD – Kingsford’s girls soccer team started practice indoors this spring, and now they will begin its season inside as well, playing Marquette in the Superior Dome Tuesday.
“This year’s team has been working hard indoors,” coach Todd Formolo said. “We have not seen the outdoors since last year.”
Tuesday’s contest was scheduled to be played at Kingsford’s Commemorative Field, but conditions there have forced the switch to the Dome.
“We should be competitive,” Formolo said. “It’s just one of those years, where you just don’t know because you can’t get outside and gauge what you have.”
Formolo said this is the longest he’s been unable to get his team outside since he started coaching eight years ago.
“I think we have a good group here,” he added. “They are really smart, energetic, and we have good leaders returning.”
The Flivvers return 16 players from last year’s 11-4-1 U.P. runner-up team, which set a school record for wins. Five freshmen and one senior foreign exchange student join the returning group.
Seniors Afton Barrows, Samantha Flemming and Marissa Menghini are this year’s captains.
“We return a good group,” Formolo said. “And we have a good core with the new girls.”
Formolo has also been impressed with the preseason efforts of Santina Bianco, Angie Tripp and Megan VanPembrook.
“Great workouts so far,” he said.
Courtney Qualley returns to guard the net for the Flivvers.
“I’m looking forward to her having another great year,” Formolo said.
Katie Pepin, a teacher at Kingsford, joins Formolo on the coaching staff this season.
“She brings a lot of soccer knowledge to the program,” Formolo said.
Tuesday’s Marquette match begins at 4 p.m. Central. The Flivver are scheduled to travel to Three Lakes on Friday before hopefully getting the home campaign going against Iron Mountain on May 2.
“We’re just looking forward to getting the season off the ground,” Formolo said.
