Doris Bertrand

MILL VALLEY, Calif. – Doris Mae (Henrickson) Bertrand, 85, of Mill Valley, Calif., died Sunday, April 7, 2013, at home, after a long illness.

She is survived by her daughters, Jean Bertrand (Tony Leuin) of Mill Valley, Sally Bertrand Mills of Talbott, Tenn.; grandchildren, Miriam Leuin Fendler (Tony Fendler), Adam Leuin, and Elizabeth Leuin, Jacquelyn Mills Murray (Johnny Murray), Sara Mills; and great-grandson, Liam Murray.

She was predeceased by her husband, William F. Bertrand; and her daughter, Mary Bertrand.

Doris was born in Iron Mountain, daughter of Melvin and Ruby Henrickson. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1946 and attended secretarial school in Milwaukee.

While working as a legal secretary in Iron Mountain, she met Bill. Their especially close 58-year marriage began in Iron Mountain on Nov. 1, 1952. Bill went into the insurance business and formed the Bertrand Insurance Agency, where Doris worked closely with him at the next desk for nearly 30 years.

They enjoyed many life-long friendships, family gatherings, and traveling. They retired in 1992, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to become full-time grandparents.

Bill often referred to Doris as “the granny nanny.” Always inseparable, in their later years they enjoyed their many trips to see the Tennessee grandchildren, traveling throughout California, fine dining, and numerous games of cribbage.

Following Bill’s death, Doris’ health declined markedly, and Bill’s memorial service had to be postponed. As a result, their lives will be remembered together with a joint service and interment in Iron Mountain this summer.

A Catholic Mass will be offered at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church, followed by graveside services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the cancer research organization of the donor’s choice.

The family wishes to thank our wonderful caregivers who cared for both Bill and Doris: Suzan Chan, Denner Flores, Annie Martin and Tammy Jones.
