Fatal fire in Crystal Falls

CRYSTAL FALLS – A Crystal Falls woman perished in a structure fire that occurred during the early morning hours today.

Troopers from the Iron Mountain Post responded to 564 Lind Road in Crystal Falls Township to investigate the report of a structure fire at approximately 12:50 a.m.

The residence fire was discovered by the homeowner, Douglas Takala when he returned home from work.

Sgt. Dave Stuck of the Iron Mountain State Police the residence was fully engulfed in flames at this time.

The Crystal Falls Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

Human remains were located inside the residence, and are believed to be that of Sandra Takala, 58, and spouse of Douglas Takala.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, as well as the post detective from the Iron Mountain Post, responded to the scene. Sgt. Stuck said the cause of the fire is unknown.

The fire remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Northstar EMS, the Iron County Sheriff’s Department and We Energies.
