Jeanne Sharkey

NORWAY – Jeanne M. Sharkey, 103, of Norway, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.

She was born in Norway on Feb. 2, 1910, daughter of the late Arthur and Lillian (Gendron) Marcell.

Jeanne married Bert Sharkey on Oct. 23, 1937, in Escanaba, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1997.

After living several years in Escanaba, Bert and Jeanne moved to Norway and operated Caviani’s Bar until they renovated Ver Muelen General Store on U.S. 2 and opened Bert’s Bar from 1941 to 1978 when they sold it. The bar is now known as the Thirsty Whale.

Jeanne is survived by her nieces, Jeannette Masty of Norway, Helen Roach of Florence, Wis., Sylvia DuBois of Pewaukee, Wis., Charlene (Tom) McCarthy of Norway, Phyllis (Art) Goodwin of Arnold, Calif., Patricia (Don) Binns of Boulder, Colo.; nephews, Art (Mary Ann) Pancheri of Folsom, Calif., and Art Marcell of Green Bay, Wis.; sister-in-law, Lucille Marcell of Norway; and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Edward, Arthur and Philip Marcell; two sisters, Cecelia Pancheri and Alice Rapin; and two nieces, Carol Sue Bilski and Sharon Haack.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at the church, with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
