My bill was paid
Do you believe the number 13 is unlucky?
Most people do. Even to the point that high-rises do not have a thirteenth floor. Elevators go directly from the twelfth floor to the fourteenth.
I do not believe 13 is unlucky because in the late afternoon of the 13th day of the 3rd month of the 13th year of 2000, I refueled my automobile at a local station.
On my way to pay for my gasoline, a young man bumped into me and thanked me for my service.
He said that he had seen my license plate on which was printed “Veteran, World War II.”
The best was yet to come. When my turn came to pay for my fuel, the clerk told me that my bill was paid.
He couldn’t tell me who paid it for me so I was unable to return the thanks.
I do hope he reads this letter so he will know I am truly grateful and do not believe the number 13 is unlucky.
