KINGSFORD – Northern Michigan University’s new volleyball assistant enjoyed her season with the Kingsford Flivvers.

Mandie Meyer, who recently was named to the Wildcats volleyball coaching staff, guided the Flivvers to 2012 Great Northern Conference and district volleyball titles.

“I was very happy and proud of what my girls at Kingsford High School accomplished this past season,” Meyer said. “We had a lot of great talent, but what really made them shine was their desire to learn new things and to work hard.”

Meyer cited Flivver seniors Carlee Benzie, Emily Sherk, Marissa Menghini, Andrea Roell, Margo Wittenbach and Shelby Londo.

“Our six seniors were great role models both on and off the court,” Meyer said. “Their desire to win really helped us through the tough matches.”

The former Flivver head coach also expressed appreciation to others involved with the volleyball program.

“I was grateful to have such great support from the community and, especially, the parents,” Meyer said. “They were really involved in the program in a positive way which made for my experience at Kingsford that much more enjoyable.

“Our jayvee and freshman teams also did really well,” she said. “Jerry (Roberge), Bill (Paupore) and Amy (Johnson) did a great job teaching the girls not only the fundamentals and basics of the game but to also have fun while doing it. They were a pleasure to work with.”

Meyer, a former NMU volleyball star from 2006 to 2009, coached previously at Negaunee High School. She also worked at the Northern Lights YMCA in Iron Mountain as well as coaching the Flivvers in 2012.

“I was sad to have to leave the Kingsford volleyball program because I really felt at home and enjoyed working with all the girls, coaching staff and athletic director,” Meyer said. “Coaching at the collegiate level is something I have always wanted to do since I graduated. This was an opportunity I just could not pass up.”

NMU is presently going through spring volleyball drills.

“The girls have been working on developing their technical skills along with conditioning and weight training,” Meyer said.

Kingsford is in the process of finding a new volleyball coach.
