FOSTER CITY – Roger J. Conard, 76, of Foster City, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
Roger was born on March 9, 1936, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., son of the late Joseph and Beatrice (Paul) Conard. He was raised in the Sturgeon Bay area and after he left school, joined the Merchant Marine. He then spent the next 26 years with the United States Coast Guard, retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1980. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard Roger spent another 13 years working for Luedtke’s Marine Construction.
He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Moose Lodge, and a member of the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50. Roger enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed feeding and watching the wildlife in his yard.
In 1956 he married Doris Plonke and they raised five children together. After Roger’s retirement in 1981, they moved to Foster City. Doris preceded him in death in 1998.
Roger is survived by his children, Robert Conard of Iron Mountain, James (Holly) Conard of Breitung Township, Cindy Ferrary of Sault Ste. Marie, Valerie (Gary) Wolf of Yukon, Okla., and Scott (Susan) Conard of Marinette, Wis.; a brother, Tom Conard of Luxemburg, Wis.; sisters, Doris Timmerman of Grand Rapids and Dorothy Conard of Milwaukee; grandchildren, Ben (Emily) Conard, Emily Conard, Shawn Conard, Christina (Rob) Woodman, Eric (Elise) Ferrary, Jason (Ashlee) Wood, Steven (Leah) Wood and Christina Wolf; step-grandchildren, Gary Wolf Jr. and Lindsey Hughes; great-grandchildren, Olivia Conard and Rason Wood.
In addition to his wife, Roger was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Michael Ferrary; seven brothers, John, Lawrence, Alvin, Norman, Donnie, Harold and Edwin Conard.
Visitation will be Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow Friday at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Darryl Pepin will officiate. Burial will be in the Foster City Cemetery.
