Northland volleyball struggles

DUNBAR, Wis. – On a weekend that saw the Northland International men’s basketball team win the Midwest Regional championship, the volleyball team had polar opposite in results.

NIU, participating in the second Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division 2 play date at UW-Whitewater, was trying to stay in the hunt for a favorable position in the 12-team division.

NIU suffered a 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-8) loss to Concordia in the first round.

Marquette, third in the standings, knocked off the Pioneers 3-0 ( 25-17, 25-21, 25-20). Wisconsin-Platteville ended NIU’s day with another 3-2 loss (18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-7).

“Today was really disappointing and at times very discouraging,” NIU Coach Dave Herron said. “At critical times we could not produce points because of a lack of offense and could not prevent points because of a lack of defense. The match then became a game of chance and when you miss crucial serves, shank passes and hit for errors the chances are not in your favor.”

The Pioneers are “short in stature and experience.”

“We won’t stop, though,” Herron said. “We will continue to take our God given ability and go forward into the God granted opportunity.”

NIU hosts Michigan Tech on Tuesday and UW-Fond du Lac on Thursday. Both matches start at 7:30 p.m.
