HANCOCK – Kingsford made a third-period comeback Saturday but fell short in a 6-3 Lake Superior Hockey Conference loss to Hancock at the Houghton County Arena.

Hancock scored four goals in the first period and added one in the second before the Flivvers got untracked in the third period.

Flivvers’ Reid Pietila, Alex Wiitanen and Nick Brule struck for third-period goals to close the gap to 5-3 with about seven minutes left. Reid Pietila, Ted Pietila (two), Sean Ryan, Wiitanen and Tony Ward earned assists.

Hancock added an empty-net goal in the final two minutes.

Flivver goalie Conor Berndt shut out Hancock for the final five minutes of the second period and all of the third.

Kingsford (9-14-1) begins MHSAA Division 2 pre-regional play Tuesday, meeting host Marquette at 6 p.m. (Central time). If Kingsford wins, the next regional contest will be Thursday at Mountain View Arena.
