11th District reports meeting
HERMANSVILLE – The 11th District of the American Legion, Department of Michigan, held their mid-winter meeting recently at the Reino American Legion Post 21 in Stambaugh. The meeting was held as part of the Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts mid-winter conference.
Vice commander of the 11th District, Stan Kennedy of the Pickford American Legion Post 323 presided at the meeting. Representatives from 11 American Legion Posts attend the district meeting. Seven officers were present.
Prior to the business meeting, Kennedy introduced the guests. They were John Mella of the Iron Mountain Post 50 who introduced Ray Moore candidate for Department commander for 2013-14. Candidate Moore gave a brief talk on his goals if elected, which include strong focus on veteran assistance, membership and youth programs.
Jack Koivisto, Zone 5 commander, spoke on the Districts membership goals and the winter tour.
Pat Kline, state service officers, thanked everyone for all the assistance he gets from the Posts in the U.P. and also spoke about the special grants that is going to bring on a U.P. service officer, noting that the grant only allows his to be on for limited time.
Wayne Roy, Rock American Legion Post 559, read the minutes of the previous meeting.
The finance report included the savings, checking and CDs.
Don Hudon, Menominee American Legion Post 146 spoke on the upcoming summer convention to be held in Menominee. Vice commander Kennedy challenged all the no show Posts to attend the summer convention in Menominee.
The next meeting of the 11th district will be held at the Rapid River American Legion Post 301 on April 20, at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern time).
Legionnaires in attendance, signed get well cards for George Maciejewski and Jim Farero and were mailed.
Service officer, Vanhese of Stephenson Post, spoke on those receiving travel from the VA will be required to fill out the form that will require direct deposit of you travel pay into your personal checking or saving accounts.
Vice commander Kennedy appointed the following to a nominating committee: Dave Spence of Pickford Post 323; Mike Yeadon, Sault St. Marie Post 3 and James Wash, Hermansville Post 340. Those wishing to hold office in the 11th District for the 2013-14 are to contact a committee member.
Everyone stood for a moment of silence for their departed members.
A letter was ready from the Iron Mountain American Legion Post 50 inviting all legionnaires to attend the second annual Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts Legislative Dinner held April 27.
The 50/50 drawing was won by Dave Schram of Gladstone Post 71.
