Lady Trojans complete perfect Skyline season

CRYSTAL FALLS – Forest Park wrapped up the girls basketball season Wednesday with a perfect Skyline Conference record.

The Trojans (12-0 Skyline), with Lexi Gussert registering 30 points in 21 minutes, downed Rapid River 65-22 at Eddie Chambers Memorial Gymnasium.

“Rapid River played hard but they’re just undermanned,” Trojans coach Jeff Syrjanen said. “This was a nice way to get all the kids on the floor and everybody could contribute.”

Gussert scored 12 points in the first quarter and 13 in the third. The junior added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Gina Graff contributed five assists while Kendra Campbell had three more of the Trojans’ 14 steals.

Forest Park seniors Graff and Ronnie Jaeger started in the final regular season home game.

“We were continually rotating people,” Syrjanen said.

The Trojans (19-1 overall) begin Class D District 127 tournament play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, taking on Ewen-Trout Creek in Crystal Falls.

Forest Park’s junior varsity defeated Rapid River and also finished the Skyline Conference season unbeaten. Both Forest Park teams suffered their only losses this season to Kingsford on Jan. 31
